Asheville Shambhala Center Scholarship Fund (July 2017)

Purpose:  The Scholarship Fund provides Asheville Shambhala Center members financial assistance to attend core Shambhala path programs at land centers. Example programs might include Shambhala Guide Training, Shambhala Path Meditation Instructor Training, Enlightened Society Assembly, Warrior Assembly, and Sacred World Assembly.

Eligibility:  Applicants must be current members of the Shambhala Meditation Center who are demonstrating a commitment to practice, providing financial support, or volunteering at the Center.

Application:  Candidates will be required to provide a brief statement of their need/financial circumstances, their plans for raising funds from other sources, and a statement of aspiration for serving the Center after the supported program.

Criteria for Awards: Awards may be used for tuition/program costs only.  Selection of recipients and determination of award amounts shall be based on the following:

  • Demonstrated financial need;
  • Level of current/recent service to the Asheville Shambhala Center, such as an Educator, coordinator, or other volunteer capacities;
  • Potential for continued/enhanced service to the Asheville Shambhala Center and its mission of creating enlightened society by attending a supported program.

Awards shall be disbursed directly to the Center hosting the supported program.  If available, awards will be matched by the Land Center.

Scholarship Selection Committee and Applications Review Procedure (July 2017)

Applications should be submitted prior to February 1 for Spring and Summer programs and by June 1st for Fall programs.

Applications will be submitted via email to [email protected] and contain a brief statement of need/financial circumstances, plans for raising funds from other sources, and a statement of aspiration for serving the Center after the supported program. Applications should also address each of the Criteria for Awards.

A committee of 3 (minimum) will review the applications; in addition to the Chagdzo, who will be the financial representative on the Review Committee, one other member must be a representative of the Governing Council.

Applications received will be shared with the members of the Committee by email with a recommendation by the Chagdzo as to the amount of the award, in consideration of the balance in the fund.  When the Committee agrees on the award amount, the applicant will be notified by email with a cc to the Center Director.  The disbursement will be made directly to the Center offering the Program before it begins.
